Kitchen Assistant

PURPOSE:
To assist the Cook in preparing and serving nutritious meals and in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen and dishwashing area.
QUALITIES NEEDED:
GENERAL
-Experience in institutional or food service setting for large groups
-Knowledge of and experience food health and safety practices
-Knowledge of dishwashing procedures
-Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds including unloading food, carrying trays of food or dishes and lifting supplies and/or equipment as needed.
-Ability to visually identify and respond to sanitary or environmental hazards
-Ability to operate kitchen equipment according to safe recommended methods
-Ability to determine cleanliness of dishes, food surfaces, and kitchen area
-Physical mobility and endurance to perform tasks while standing for long periods of time (i.e., 60 minutes or more)
SPECIFIC
Have obtained food service certification through participation in a sanctioned ServSafe course (must provide valid certificate)
Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
-Assist in the daily operations of the camps food service as directed by the Camp Cook.
-Assist in preparation of food as the menu indicates including washing and peeling
-Prepare foods including washing and peeling.
-Assist in baking breads, pastries, muffins, etc. as directed
-Set up food, supplies, and utensils for dining hall distribution.
-Store food and leftovers at proper temperature.
-Assist in routine sanitation of the kitchen and related equipment.
-Clean and maintain all food-preparation and storage areas.
-Wash dishes, serving and preparation equipment and utensils according to required methods.
-Reduce waste, reuse items, and recycle as indicated through the camps procedures.
-Assist in preparation and packaging of any food for use outside the camp dining hall.
-Work with cook and any volunteer staff in reviewing pack out requests to ensure adequate and accurate amounts and variety.
-Prepare and store pack out foods according to camp and health code procedures
-Advise cook and/or volunteer staff on equipment or preparation materials needed for identified menu choices.
Other Job Duties:
Considerations for additional job duties may be made based on the size of the kitchen staff, food service style (i.e., buffet, family style, etc.). Tasks may also be related to maintenance of bathrooms areas that serve the kitchen staff and functions.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
